Germicidal Lamp Basics

Ultraviolet germicidal lamps are low pressure mercury vapor lamps that are producing ultraviolet light by electrical discharge. The produced electromagnetic energy (UV light) has a lethal effect to microorganisms. Ultraviolet light is used in industrial and residential applications to purify water, air and surfaces.

Amalgam Lamps

Amalgam lamps are best suited for high flowing water treatment systems and they are built into multiple lamp reactor units. There are several advantages of amalgam lamps over other UV lamps.

The purpose of the amalgam technology in ultraviolet lamps are to enable optimum mercury vapor pressure at wider temperature range. In the amalgam ultraviolet lamps manufactured by Superior Quartz Products, Inc the mercury is alloyed with Indium forming an amalgam of the two metals. The amalgam is placed and fixed on Gold Spot at two optimally calculated locations along the inside axis of the quartz tube. This provides the optimum mercury vapor pressure at higher lamp temperatures. The benefit is that the UV output intensity of the amalgam lamp is not affected when the ambient water temperature fluctuates over a large temperature range. Water temperature will fluctuate in any typical Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) mainly due to weather conditions and flow rates. Maintaining a constant output over a large ambient temperature range is critical to the performance of a UV system because if the intensity of the ultraviolet lamp falls, its rate of effectiveness of inactivating microorganisms will decrease dramatically.

Ozone Formation and Destruction

Ozone Producing Lamps

The ozone producing low pressure UV lamps are made from especially clear quartz glass to transmit the 185nm wavelength to make ozone. Superior Quartz Products, Inc. can produce very high output ozone lamps for many professional industrial applications.

UV lamps are energy source for both making and destroying ozone.

Ozone formation

When a photon of light with a wavelength shorter than 200 nanometers is absorbed by an Oxygen molecule (O2), the energy breaks the molecule into two Oxygen atoms (O). One of these atoms can join with an Oxygen molecule to form an Ozone molecule (O3).

Ozone destruction

When a photon of light with a wavelength between 200 to 300 nanometers is absorbed by an Ozone molecule (O3), the energy breaks the molecule into an Oxygen molecule (O2) and an Oxygen atom (O). The Oxygen atom can break an Ozone molecule and form two Oxygen molecules.

Ozone generation using ultraviolet light has been used for many years for many industrial applications. Ozone is a powerful oxidizing agent. It can oxidize many organic compounds and is used commercially as a bleach for waxes, oils, textiles, and as a deodorizing agent. Because it is a powerful germicidal agent, it is also used to sterilize air and drinking water. The amount of the ozone produced by a UV lamp depends on the application design, but it is also greatly impacted by the ambient temperature, humidity, and the air flow speed near the lamp.
